Chapter 3

Mabel sat at her on the ground with all of her fabrics surrounding her, along with her knitting needles a crochet needle, some needles and threads, and a huge sewing machine her mother had bought her for her birthday.

What could she possibly be doing you may be asking. The school play was coming in two weeks; and the girl had happily volunteered to not only be in the play, but she also volunteered to make the costumes.

Her role in the play was a minor one, but it was making the costumes that really had her excited. Her own work would be on display for everyone to see; and she wanted everything to be perfect.

Mabel hummed to herself as she sewed on of the leads clothes; a shiny pink princess's dress.

She loved the thought of making costumes for a Midsummer's Night Dream. Some possibilities with her design, and then she would be on her way into being a great fashion designer.

Mabel heard a knock on her door to see her mother standing in the doorway.

"Hi Mom!" She chirped. "Look at the dress I made!" She eagerly showed her mother the pink dress.

"That's lovely sweetie. I came in to see if you wanted some help with your costumes. You have to make forty in two weeks and I thought I could ease some stress."

Mabel shook her head. She was appreciative of her mother's offer, but she wanted to do this for herself. It would have had more meaning if she worked hard without taking the easy way out. Even if it would be hard.

"Thanks Mom, but I would like to do this. I want to show that sometimes hard work pays off if you do it yourself."

"But sweetie, I don't want you to bite off more than you can chew. You remember what happened last time..."

"I promise it won't happen again! Mabel protested. "I'll ask for help if I need it... Okay?"

Her mother smiled.

"All right..." She started walking out. "But you'll need to call it a night soon to finish your homework."

"Yes Mom!" Mabel chirped, starting on the fairy costumes.

Her mother left the room, a little concerned her daughter was getting in over her head.

A little later that week, Mabel walked to play practice ready to release and show the costumes that she had finished.

On the stage the group was mingling amongst themselves as the stage crew was going over everything involving the props and the lights and the filming.

Dipper was head of stage crew and had carefully laid out everyone's task, leaving everything organized and precise for the play.

Mabel walked towards the stage with her huge box, filled with costumes.

Dipper stared at her over his clipboard.

"Mabel did you actually put that thing in your locker?" He asked.

"Nothing is impossible in this world, bro bro." She said, smiling brightly.

Dipper rolled his eyes as he turned back to the crew.

"Mabel are those are costumes?" A girl with long dark brown hair asked.

"It is, Julie. It's not every single one, but it should give a good idea to how the costumes will look."

Mabel opened the box and handed out the costumes.

"This is you costume, Julie. I give a fairy princess look, playing a perfect part in a fantasy.

She handed a boy something that looked like prince's attire.

"This is your costume, Mike. I thought you should have a strong regal feel."

She then pulled out fairy costumes for both male and female.

"These are the fairy costumes for male and female. I wanted them to flashy yet one with nature." Mabel smiled.

The kids looked over everything.

"So what do you guys think?" She asked, her eyes wide with the hopes that they would love them.

"This... isn't what I had in mind..." Julie said, looking numbly at the dress.

Mabel felt her face fall a bit.

"You don't like it?" She asked.

"It's not that I don't, it just that I was expecting something more gothic."

"But... The play is a comedy..." Mabel protested.

"I know but, I want something that's more somber yet classy. You could do that for me. Right?" Julie asked, smiling.

Mabel smiled, although she felt a little unsure. She was very pleased with what she made, but she wanted to please the others as well.

"I can tweak it for you." She smiled.

"Thanks Mabes!" She ran off.

"Anybody else want something changed?" She asked, hoping that was it for changes.

Dipper was awakened at dawn on that Saturday morning to hear the sound of Mabel's sewing machine whirling behind his wall.

The boy sighed as he decided to pay a visit to his older twin's room.

He knocked on the door.

"Mabel! What are you doing there?!" He called out.

No answer.

He knocked again.

"Mabel! Are you in there?!" He called again.

The sound of moving around and then a crashing came behind the door before Mabel finally opened it. Her hair was a mess and she had huge black circles under her eyes.

"Mabel...? How long have you been up?"

"Since four thirty this morning." She said, as if nothing was wrong.

"And what time did you go to sleep last night?" He asked, not liking where this was going.

"Um... Maybe one or two in the morning, I don't remember..." Mabel grabbed her head. Thinking was making her brain hurt.

"Mabel you only slept two and a half hours!?" Dipper asked, worried.

"I didn't have time to sleep!" Mabel protested. "I need to work on these costumes!"

"Mabel that's not healthy." Her brother cried. "You should have learned from me what sleep deprivation does to you."

"I just need to finish the costumes, Dipping sauce, and everything will be fine!"

"Look Mabel... If you need to some help..."

"I DON'T NEED HELP DIPPER! I CAN HANDLE IT!" The girl growled.

"You've worked so hard, Mabel; but it's okay to have someone help you. I got a lot my things organized for the crew so I have plenty of time to help."

"Please Dipper..." Mabel begged. "Please let me do this. I know I can."

The younger twin was very reluctant to back away, but he realized if she wanted to continue on her own, he couldn't change her mind.

"Okay Mabel..." He sighed. "But know that Mom and I will be here if you need help."

He went downstairs to make some breakfast.

The girl sniffled as she started up her machine again.

Later that next week, Mabel hoped these changes to costumes would please the cast. The costumes this time were a little different but even more lovely then her first designs.

However, the teacher heading the play wasn't entirely impressed or thrilled.

"These costumes are too over the top." She said in a haughty voice. "Redo them!"

"But this is the second time I did them!" Mabel cried, trying everything in her power not to burst into tears.

"Well you better get back to work then. The play is next Friday night; and I expect the best from you Miss Pines."

Mabel went back to her sewing machine to redo the costumes again. Mumbling that was going to do this right; even if it killed her.

Outside looking in, Dipper watched his sister, working so hard on her costumes; that to him seemed nice the first time around.

He wanted to help her so bad, but anytime him or his mother offered, she would beg them to let her be. It was her responsibility and she would see through it.

The third revamp had everyone complaining that they wanted something that was elegant but blending in with nature and fantasy.

Mabel was back at the machine, with a huge headache from lack of sleep. She hadn't gone outside in days. She just sat in her room, trying everything in her power to get these costumes perfect.

The forth time she brought them to the rehearsal. She noticed everyone seemed to like the costumes. However...

"Your costumes are looking lovely this time around Mabel, but you need to do one more tweak before they are ready." Said the teacher.

"But... The play is tomorrow; and I have worked so hard!" She protested.

"Well... You should be able to finish them. From the look of things you don't have much to do."

Mabel nodded numbly as she sulked home.

She walked in carrying her box.

"Hi sweetie how was...?"

The twins mother was surprised when she saw Mabel trudge upstairs not saying a word. She usually always happily told her about her day.

Dipper came in next.

"Dipper what's wrong with your sister?" She asked.

"I don't know." Dipper shrugged.

Mabel was once more sitting at her sewing machine. Something was boiling within her usual happy nature. Something that she hadn't really felt since the time she made the bet with Stan to see who was the better boss. Which left her with Soos unable to handle things, and Wendy to take advantage of her; and Dipper well... brought back something that almost destroyed the Mystery Shack.

The feeling of frustration and anger.

Mabel tried to think positive as always but stress was finally catching up to her until her body started shaking and she released her anger the only way she could think of.

She started to cry and scream.

Mabel collapsed to the ground, as tears poured down her face. It was too hard. She couldn't keep up anymore.

Her mother ran into the room to see the girl sobbing in a ball.

"Baby... What's the matter?" She asked gently, hugging the crying girl.

"It's hard..." She wheezed. "It's so hard..."

Dipper looked around the room to see the mess of clothes scatter and his sister breaking down on the floor as she cried into her mother's shirt.

"It'll be fine sweetie..." The woman soothed. "You've worked so hard. Why don't lay down for awhile."

Mabel sniffed as she dragged herself to her bed. The instant she laid her head against the pillow she was out.

The twins mother looked around the room to see the costumes to see that were lovely, but they were still a bit incomplete. Mabel must have started to slack off when she started to become stressed and exhausted.

Dipper looked at her.

"Grab everything, Dipper." She said.

He nodded as he followed his mother downstairs.

The two worked diligently on the costumes, making they were the vision that Mabel wanted. They kept there ears perked in case Mabel had woken up from her sleep.

After what seemed like hours, their mother folded the costumes neatly and place them back in the box and placed back in Mabel's room; noticing that she hadn't budged.

"At last..." She sighed as she shut the light off in her room.

Mabel woke up the next morning to see the costumes had been placed back in the box.

She hadn't finished them; and the play was tonight. What would she do now?

Not knowing what else to do, she showered and dressed before she sulked off to school. Going as far as to flat out refuse to look in the box. The cast was going to be so mad at the final product.

The school day ended faster then Mabel would have liked. When the final bell rang, she slowly made her well to the PAS to give everyone their final costume.

She laid the box in the center.

"Well everyone..." She breathed. "I hope you like them..."

Everyone opened the box, pulling out the costumes.

"Oh Mabel these are beautiful!" The teacher said, looking in awe.

The older twin was puzzled at this, the costumes yesterday didn't look right, and she hadn't completed them. Now they were beautiful.

She walked over to see that costumes had somehow been completed, in the vision that she and everyone had wanted. It was her best work.

"How did they get finished?" She thought.

That's when she noticed the stage crew off in the seating area talking; when she noticed Dipper smile at her.

"You made all this by yourself?" Julie asked, in shock.

Mabel looked at her brother and smiled.

"Actually... I had some help..." She said, softly.

Everyone got into their costumes as the prepared for the play. With Mabel's own fairy costume being untouched. Just the way she had wanted it.

The play was an absolute success. Everyone had a great time and Mabel's costumes were the talk of the night.

Once the play was over and everyone had left, Mabel waited for her brother to finish cleaning up.

"You finished the costumes for me?" She asked.

"You worked so hard on the and Mom and I didn't want to see devastated, so we added the finishing touches for you." Dipper said.

"Look bro bro, I'm sorry I refused your help. I just wanted to accomplish something for myself to only get in over my head." Said Mabel, looking down at the ground.

"You did accomplish something, those costumes were great!"

"Next I promise to ask for help when I really need it... Mystery Twins?"

"Mystery Twins."

The two bumped their fists together.

"Let's go, Mom's waiting in the car."

The two walked out.

"Well there's one good about this..." Dipper chuckled.

"What's that?" Mabel asked.

"Bill wasn't here to ruin it."

The twins laughed.

Dipper ran out to meet his mother, but Mabel froze in place, feeling the smile drop from her face; and for some reason she felt unnerved
This was a touching chapter. I really liked how it came it out.

Is this gonna continue? It seems possible with the end of this chapter being a cliffhanger
